The Importance of Forgiveness

Being able to forgive is extremely important in your relationship. By forgiving your boyfriend or accepting his apology, you are able to release the negative emotions bottled deep down inside. Harboring such angry and irrational feelings is not good for you, your partner, or the relationship. It can lead to resentment, bitterness, and the inability to move on.
If you and your partner have had a blowout fight where hurtful words were exchanged it is important to forgive. Don’t latch on to the words he said in a bout of anger. He probably never meant what he said and has apologized for it. While you may be hurt for some time, accepting his apology is important, especially if he is contrite about his words and actions.
Once you forgive your partner, it’s important to move on. Don’t bring up past experiences during current arguments, especially if you accepted his apology. Forgiveness means it’s resolved and instead of forgetting what happened or worse, holding on to how you felt in the moment, learn from the experience and use it to make your relationship stronger and better. Everything, good or bad is a learning experience, it’s up to you to decide what you want to do with it.
Forgiving is also important to your physical and emotional health. By releasing all the negativity and hostility, you can be less anxious and even sleep better. You may even feel as if a weight has been lifted from your chest because you’ve let go of the past and decided to move on. So this means it’s better for your health to forgive. Yes, you let the defensive wall down and are susceptible to being hurt again but it’s better to risk it than stay in an unhappy place.
It’s true what they say, “forgive but never forget.” Never forget what you learned from the incident. Take it and use the knowledge you’ve received to avoid making the same mistakes. Don’t hold a grudge against the person you care about the most. Love them with your whole heart and know there are times you both will get hurt by each other. How you handle it makes all the difference.
